What Are BOPP Bags? BOPP Laminated vs Normal Non Woven Bags

By · · bag types, BOPP

A BOPP bag is a non woven carry bag with a thin, glossy plastic film bonded over its printed surface. The film is BOPP — biaxially oriented polypropylene — and it is what gives these bags their shine, their sharp colours and a surface you can wipe clean. Underneath, it is the same non woven fabric as any other non woven bag.

What “BOPP” actually means

Polypropylene is the same plastic non woven fabric is made from. To make BOPP film, a polypropylene film is stretched in two directions — lengthwise and crosswise — while it is being made. That stretching is the “biaxially oriented” part. It leaves the film thin, stiff, very smooth and clear, which is why it is used wherever print has to look good: biscuit wrappers, labels, and these bags.

How a BOPP laminated bag is made

  1. The fabric. We start with non woven polypropylene fabric — 110 GSM for our BOPP bags, well above the 60 GSM minimum the government sets for non woven carry bags.
  2. The print. Your design is printed in full colour, so photographs, gradients and fine Telugu or English text all come out clearly.
  3. The film. A clear BOPP film is laminated over the printed fabric, and the bag is then cut and stitched with its side panels and handles.

Because the film sits on top, the ink is covered. It does not rub off on clothes or scuff when the bag is carried, which is the most common complaint with ordinary printed bags.

BOPP laminated vs normal non woven: the differences

One honest caveat on water: the film protects the surfaces of the bag. Water can still get in through the stitching and the opening, so a BOPP bag is water-resistant, not waterproof.

Which shops BOPP suits

BOPP is worth the extra rupee or two when the bag itself is part of your brand:

  • Jewellery and saree showrooms, where the bag goes home with an expensive purchase and gets reused for months.
  • Textile and family clothing stores that want a photo-quality print of their shop and models.
  • Wedding and function orders, and festival-season gift bags.
  • Supermarkets and sweet shops, where spills are likely and a wipe-clean bag stays presentable.

A normal non woven bag is the better buy when cost per bag matters more than finish — everyday kirana and medical shop counters, or very large quantities — or when a soft bag that folds flat is preferred.

Common questions

Is a BOPP bag waterproof? It is water-resistant. The film keeps rain and spills off the printed surfaces and wipes clean, but water can still get in through the stitching and the opening.

Is BOPP eco-friendly? It is plastic, not biodegradable. Its environmental case is reuse: a sturdy laminated bag replaces many single-use covers. Because both the film and the fabric are polypropylene, the bag is a single-plastic product, which is easier to recycle than mixed-material bags where polypropylene is collected — but whether it is recycled depends on local collection.

Does the print fade? The ink sits under the film, so it is protected from rubbing and wiping. Like any print, long hours in direct sunlight will eventually dull the colours.

How many times can it be reused? It depends on what is carried in it, but laminated bags are built for repeated use — our customers’ shoppers reuse them for months.
